Skillet’s John Cooper on Apostasy Among Young Christian Leaders

by George Brahm

John Cooper, lead singer for the rock band Skillet, responded to the litany of recent apostasies among young Christian leaders. In a Facebook post titled ‘What in God’s Name is Happening in Christianity?’ put up on Tuesday, August 13, Cooper directly addressed the reasons given by Hillsong songwriter Marty Sampson for renouncing his Christian faith, before highlighting the need for Christians to stay grounded in a truth-driven faith over an emotion-driven one. Here is the text of the post in its entirety (not corrected for spelling or punctuation):

“Ok I’m saying it. Because it’s too important not to. What is happening in Christianity? More and more of our outspoken leaders or influencers who were once “faces” of the faith are falling away. And at the same time they are being very vocal and bold about it. Shockingly they still want to influence others (for what purpose?)as they announce that they are leaving the faith. I’ll state my conclusion, then I’ll state some rebuttals to statements I’ve read by some of them. Firstly, I never judge people outside of my faith. Even if they hate religion or Christianity. That is not my place and I have many friends who disagree with my religion and that is 100% fine with me. However, when it comes to people within my faith, there must be a measure of loyalty and friendship and accountability to each other and the Word of God.

“My conclusion for the church (all of us Christians): We must STOP making worship leaders and thought leaders or influencers or cool people or “relevant” people the most influential people in Christendom. (And yes that includes people like me!) I’ve been saying for 20 years(and seemed probably quite judgmental to some of my peers) that we are in a dangerous place when the church is looking to 20 year old worship singers as our source of truth. We now have a church culture that learns who God is from singing modern praise songs rather than from the teachings of the Word. I’m not being rude to my worship leader friends (many who would agree with me) in saying that singers and musicians are good at communicating emotion and feeling. We create a moment and a vehicle for God to speak. However, singers are not always the best people to write solid bible truth and doctrine. Sometimes we are too young, too ignorant of scripture, too unaware, or too unconcerned about the purity of scripture and the holiness of the God we are singing to. Have you ever considered the disrespect of singing songs to God that are untrue of His character?

“I have a few specific thoughts and rebuttals to statements made by recently disavowed church influencers…first of all, I am stunned that the seemingly most important thing for these leaders who have lost their faith is to make such a bold new stance. Basically saying, “I’ve been living and preaching boldly something for 20 years and led generations of people with my teachings and now I no longer believe it..therefore I’m going to boldly and loudly tell people it was all wrong while I boldly and loudly lead people in to my next truth.” I’m perplexed why they aren’t embarrassed? Humbled? Ashamed, fearful, confused? Why be so eager to continue leading people when you clearly don’t know where you are headed?

“My second thought is, why do people act like “being real” covers a multitude of sins? As if someone is courageous simply for sharing virally every thought or dark place. That’s not courageous. It’s cavalier. Have they considered the ramifications? As if they are the harbingers of truth, saying “I used to think one way and practice it and preach it, but now I’ve learned all the new truth and will start practicing and preaching it.” So the influencers become the voice for truth in whatever stage of life and whatever evolution takes place in their thinking.

“Thirdly, there is a common thread running through these leaders/influencers that basically says that “no one else is talking about the REAL stuff.” This is just flatly false. I just read today in a renown worship leader’s statement, “How could a God of love send people to hell? No one talks about it.” As if he is the first person to ask this? Brother, you are not that unique. The church has wrestled with this for 1500 years. Literally. Everybody talks about it. Children talk about it in Sunday school. There’s like a billion books written on the topic. Just because you don’t get the answer you want doesn’t mean that we are unwilling to wrestle with it. We wrestle with scripture until we are transformed by the renewing of our minds.

“And lastly, and most shocking imo, as these influencers disavow their faith, they always end their statements with their “new insight/new truth” that is basically a regurgitation of Jesus’s words?! It’s truly bizarre and ironic. They’ll say “I’m disavowing my faith but remember, love people, be generous, forgive others”. Ummm, why? That is actually not human nature. No child is ever born and says “I just want to love others before loving myself. I want to turn the other cheek. I want to give my money away to others in need”. Those are bible principles taught by a prophet/Priest/king of kings who wants us to live by a higher standard which is not an earthly standard, but rather the ‘Kingdom of God’ standard. Therefore if Jesus is not the truth and if the Word of God is not absolute, then by preaching Jesus’s teachings you are endorsing the words of a madman. A lunatic who said “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father except through me.” He also said that he was alive before Abraham, and to see him was to see God because he was one with God. So why then would a disavowed christian leader promote that “generosity is good”? How would you know “what is good” without Jesus’s teachings? And will your ideas of what is “good” be different from year to year based on your experience, culture trends, poplular opinion etc and furthermore will you continue year by year to lead others into your idea of goodness even though it is not absolute? I’m amazed that so many Christians want the benefits of the kingdom of God, but with the caveat that they themselves will be the King.

“It is time for the church to rediscover the preeminence of the Word. And to value the teaching of the Word. We need to value truth over feeling. Truth over emotion. And what we are seeing now is the result of the church raising up influencers who did not supremely value truth who have led a generation who also do not believe in the supremacy of truth. And now those disavowed leaders are proudly still leading and influencing boldly AWAY from the truth.

“Is it any wonder that some of our disavowed Christian leaders are letting go of the absolute truth of the Bible and subsequently their lives are falling apart? Further and further they are sinking in the sea all the while shouting “now I’ve found the truth! Follow me!!” Brothers and sisters in the faith all around the world, pastors, teachers, worship leaders, influencers…I implore you, please please in your search for relevancy for the gospel, let us NOT find creative ways to shape Gods word into the image of our culture by stifling inconvenient truths. But rather let us hold on even tighter to the anchor of the living Word of God. For He changes NOT. “The grass withers and the flowers fade away, but the word of our God stands forever” (Isaiah 40:8)”

I am glad to see one of these ‘influencers’ come out in defense of the authority of Scripture and the importance of a robust faith that can outlast even the harshest of challenges.

A popular rock band for over two decades, Skillet recently came out with their latest album ‘Victorious’, available on their website.

  1. Interesting. Lots to digest. I am not sure though that I completely followed the main line of thought of the speaker.

But, here is what I see: American churches embracing “inclusiveness”, which is a candy-coated term for welcoming sin into the congregation. I see some pastors reluctant to talk about Hell. I heard one here in southern California tell his congregation how ridiculous it was to believe in the literal account of Genesis. I guess God needs to put this man on His throne for a while. I know of a pastor not far from me who gets his sermons online, and apparently not by seeking God for the specific message He may want that congregation to hear.

All of these kinds of things are plaguing the American church (I cannot speak to the church in other countries).

The Word of God must be our standard, period. It’s either HIS word, or it’s not. Make up your minds. Also, to quote a Jewish radio host I adore, we must make certain that we fear God more than man.

    1. Just a thought that I have spent much time digesting. The Lutherans are still Lutherans, the Baptists still Baptists the Calvinists are still Calvinists and so on. The men that started each movement believed in a living God, and by his spirit were led to the Fathers feet. Christ in you the hope of glory will take you from glory to glory, new light will be ours if we as they continue to follow the spirit of our shepherd. When light is received and it ceases to reveal new things to us it becomes darkness and many fall off the path to the celestial city. We must ask receive and ask again lest those that we reveal Christ to fail to move beyond us. By example we are to lead and it should never stop with us. Inclusiveness is a watchword today that belongs in the realm of kindness and the humanities, but not the body of Christ. This said we are not the removers of tares lest we harm the body but we need consider carefully those that are offered baptism into that body before they reveal repentance and a turning away from the things of the world. We see many infants in Christ offered positions in the work that would cause them to stumble into the pit of pride etc. We need elders of great discernment, deacons filled with the spirit of Christ. Full of a experiential knowledge of the Father and the Son. John 17:3 for this is life eternal and true food to all who receive it, the rest will attempt as Cain to enter in another way. Adam know Eve and she brought forth a Son, if we know him we will bring forth many unto salvation and many jewels in the crown that we cast at his feet.

    1. ……wrong about what? What is wrong are the lies that were spilling out of the heathen’s mouth. OR, he never read the Bible to begin with and has zero clue of what he’s talking about. I’ve read the Bible cover to cover and understand why people end up in hell (ultimately it’s people throwing themselves in hell). My 4th grade daughter understands the Bible more than a glory hound singer lol.
I’ve experienced GOD right before I ended up losing part of my left leg in Iraq and in a week long coma. Long story short, HE saved my life.
John Cooper is right, truth over emotions. But apparently that is too difficult for liberals to understand.

  2. A person cannot lose their Salvation. So the people commenting say they “left the faith” they were actually never of the faith to begin with! When I see someone supposedly ‘lose the faith’ I think of the parable os the seeds falling on differnt soil….the plant starts to grow and dies…..not rooted in Christ….

      1. Toward the end of my sermon this past Sunday August 18, I preached some of the same things that John had written in this article, it is amazing how the Holy Spirit works. The Word of God is the only truth and it is time that the church declares His truth , now and forever.

      2. Key thing about that passage. Jesus says I never knew you. Not that I knew you but I don’t know you any more. If you look at the people described they thought they were going to please God and get into heaven based upon all the religious stuff they were doing. They missed out knowing Jesus so all they doings were useless.
No Jesus and all the piety on the planet won’t get you anywhere.

  3. Many on here have replied that the problem with Christianity is that it isn’t real, that it doesn’t explain reality and real circumstances. Most are millennials and this is a generation that is REAL, and seeking the real truth not something we are just told to believe. I want to honor that and present some wisdom. What you really have left is Religion, not God. You don’t really know him yet. You can’t leave someone you’ve never really met. Religion is a man-made thing. The current church is not at all remotely what God has in mind, or what it was when Jesus was on earth. So, many of you are actually a step closer than those that blindly follow. God appreciates that. I feel you also need to be told that the conflict you have with “church truth doesn’t work in the real world” is because the church has seriously dropped the ball on revealing hard hitting genuine truth and history, instead giving you bible verses on bookmarks. It’s taken years, but I have learned the answers to those questions that resolve the conflict. Things like, how can God be love if he ordered his people to wipe out nations? Or, why is lgbt wrong? Or, how could there really be a Hell? There really is an answer to all of these and more, and the answer makes logical and loving sense. The key in this is to know that while everything is true in the bible, the bible doesn’t explain everything in history and life. Even some of the most loyal Christians can’t get this through their skull. But the Spirit of God DOES reveal all truth, it’s just people in religion are closed minded and don’t listen. But prophets do, wink. Look me up on FB.

  4. I recently reread the tiny book of Jude in my Bible. The author warns the disciples of Christ that certain men, whose condemnation has been written about, have secretly slipped in among believers in the church. He warns believers that these men are godless and change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord. It goes on to say that these dreamers pollute their own bodies, reject authority and slander celestial beings. These men speak abusively against whatever they do not understand and what things they do understand by instinct, like unreasoning animals- these are the very things that destroy them. This short book in the Bible is so powerful and speaks of what is going on in our country right now. Our Lord Jesus Christi’s coming with thousands of his holy ones to judge the godless and all the ungodly things they have done. Jude also goes on to say that the Lord’s apostles foretold that in the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires and will try to divide the body of Christ as they follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit. We, the body of Christ, need to stand strong and persevere in God’s love as we wait for the mercy of Jesus to bring us to eternal life. Our country is full of these people who hate and have no love for anyone or anything. We as believers must help anyone we can who doubts their faith or believes the lies being spewed by the evil ones of this world. The book of Jude describes our country and our world today. I will be praying for those who now have lost their faith and will also be praying for you leaders who have very tough jobs in this world where the godless voices are so loud,

    1. This is why I love the Orthodox Church. Church is not meant to make us “feel good “ and have emotional highs. It is a house, God’s house, where we come to glorify Him, hear his word, and gather the strength to live in the world in a holy fashion, as we head toward eternity in Heaven. Amen to what you have said.

  5. While I don’t believe God wants his children to relate to him out of fear, there is much in the scriptures that tells to choose to believe Christs words above all else. Here are a few relevant scriptures for all to consider on this matter:

    Jude 1:3-7 NIV
Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ. But I want to remind you, though you once knew this, that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe. And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day; as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

    2 Peter 2:1-3 NIV
But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber.

    2 Peter 3:16-17 NIV
    as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures. You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked;

  6. Couldn’t agree with him more! I title the trend within the church scene that we’re all witnessing as “Karaoke Leadership!” This applies to the pastors as well as the worship leaders! They’re nothing more than YouTube copies and mere duplicates with NOTHING original! They purchase their teaching materials, illustrations and ideas from their online church networks. While at the same time, “worship leaders” are nothing more the total mimics of the music that is found online! It’s NO SURPRISE that churches across the board, especially in America, NEVER witness ANY of the supernatural workings of Jesus abs the disciples! Leaders are more concerned about numbers and having a successful budget than leading others into getting on their faces before God and actually allowing the Holy Spirit to have freedom to move within their services!!!!!!! “IF MY PEOPLE….WILL HUMBLE THEMSELVES AND PRAY….”

    1. Amen! If I might add a few thoughts to yours. Church: (not a building owned by a denomination) but a body has he prepared himself. Music leaders, Mariam got out her timbrel and sang the praises of God. No body clapped (worshiped her) but they followed her example. The spirit of Christ is to fill the church, his body; such as he adds. The main problem is whats in the can, religion of men and not of angels, men led of a fallen angel who denied our Lord and continues through men deceived of there own selves and the adoration of the saints to lift up the spirit of self and not sacrifice. May the spirit of Christ shine into our lives and theirs and reveal to us all our blindness. Get rid of the band, the smoke and the lights and let the light of the master illuminate our minds in quietness and rest. They wandered in the wilderness away from the business of Egypt and ate simple food and grew in spiritual strength, after forty years some were ready for the promised land not because of their skills with an instrument of war or of song but because they had learned to follow the master. The rest died in their sins and rejection of the promises. Angels that excel in strength then led them and the walls of a great city were cast down. Those walls were as the lies of this world and will fall before the truth of his word the Lord of hosts is his name. When the churches cease to seek to be entertained and fall down before the throne then and only then will the music of heaven enter these dry bones and the song of the redeemed will be sung and we can finish the work and go home. No secret rapture here but a promise of renewal forever.

  7. Romans 1:21-26 gives us insight. Jesus is the Word, and He is to be diligently sought after, pursued, honored and worshiped in Spirit and in Truth. There is no other way than to trust in Jesus and obey. The more I follow Him and serve Him, the more I understand that I have so much more to learn about our relationship —me and Jesus. If I knew everything and understood Jesus completely, I would no longer be taking my steps on earth but in Heaven. What in the world do we think faith is? What is it’s purpose? When we do not understand, we have faith, we trust God because that is what is required of us in this life—our boot camp training for eternity.

    1. John 3:16 . . What does it mean to “perish”?
Who is it that receives “everlasting life”?

      Contrast everlasting punishMENT with punishING.
There’s a huge difference in what that says about the character of God!

  8. This is echoes something Rich Mullins said at a concert over 20 years ago. He commented that it was scary that people in the church looked to Christian musicians for theology instead of to their pastors and teachers, or better yet their Bibles! This is not a new problem in the church (people getting their theology from worship songs instead of the Bible), but the demand by entertainers and “worship leaders” for a platform and to be followed is becoming all too common. If we’re following Jesus because of a worship leader, then who are we actually following? Thank you for speaking truth John Cooper…

    1. Lucifer wanted a platform, the throne of the Son of the most high. He seeks to be worshipped, we should note this desire for praise in those who offer an alternative to the breaking of the bread of life in the meeting. When the musicians get a better response than the man of God in the pulpit we aught to consider both the musicians relationship with the bread of life and maybe also that of the speaker of soft things. John is speaking considerable from the heart. The churches are sick and in need of a clear thus saith the master of all men. When Christ is not seen in the leaders who is?

  9. I just heard that in some countries when you’re witnessing to muslins before they ask them if they ask they want to become a Christian, they ask Are you willing to die for your faith? Perhaps we need to be asking that question and if people are not willing to die for their faith then perhaps they are not ready to pray he gives their life to Christ.

  10. Pretty wise and inciteful observations by John! Cheers brother; to humble yourself in your fame. To know there are very strong Ortho-dox (meaning: “straight-doctrine”) leaders to learn from that have dedicated their lives to studying and teaching God’s Word rightly from scripture, vice feeling, which can change like the direction of the wind. It is good for all believers to get sharpened by respected bible teachers who have mined Truth gems from the Word they may not have known before. Let the righteous sparks of iron sharpening iron fly.

    1. Amen! To that, I remember when I found Christ, there were hymns that I could not sing for a long time as they brought me to tears. Never had that happen with any of the modern sheet music, hymns; many have a powerful message. Some new stuff has some good things to say but not quite the same and the general lack of reverence in the music style just doesn’t touch the soul the same. I left the Rock scene and never could understand how one could add Christian to it and change its rebellious nature and roots. Never see the wave during the singing of a hymn. Have you ever noticed that nobody claps when you sing a hymn for special music, instead the general response is amen! I wish we would see the lineup for the place of prayer we see when the favourite recording artist comes to church, we would see heaven moved.

It’s one thing to have truth with love that is pure, but another to have … whatever. The spirit of apostasy is real, has been present and many are now just becoming woke to its affect. It is a choice of who we submit ourselves to, to follow. My real concern is what has happened to the church, the body of believers in Jesus Christ. We’ve been feeding off so much junk that we’re looking like it and calling anything “church”.

You have factions of believers “in Christ” that is not much different than the “Hunger Games.”
The Bible says, “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that wins (winneth KJV) souls is wise.” (Proverbs 11:30)

We will go after the abortionists to save babies but neglect the homeless and vets because they are grown people. We’ll call out the LGBTQ but enable the liar leaders, (also an abomination before God) to have platform. We’ll call out the child abusers but won’t equally handle the domestic violence suffered behind closed doors at the hands of church leaders, etc.

The reality church is that we cater to our own fickle faith factions rather than live out the Christ-like example we’ve been given by none other than Jesus Christ Himself, and do so by the power of Holy Spirit.

We are not the body of Christ acting like this, but more of a multi-headed monster that picks and chooses the preferred sayings of the Bible, rather than submitting to the whole counsel of God’s Holy Scriptures. We are all guilty before God.

Frankly little would reflect the kingdom of our God in these times if it wasn’t for God being God Almighty, Self-Existent, Omnipotent, Omnipresent and Omniscient in His Righteous, Holy and Just authority. We would have no knowledge of Him in this world if it wasn’t for God being God handling our mess!

We as the church have given license to the incongruent, fragmented, disjointed and simply scary representation of the body of Christ in our biases and partiality.

Jesus said He is the Way, the Truth and the Life, no man comes to the Father but by Him. (John 14:6) True conversion is missing to even be a true witness for Him! We judge and condemn others where our relationship that is required by faith in Christ is not genuinely started or even further nurtured. Our vertical is not rooted and grounded in a loving Christ relationship as much as we like to think to have a horizontal impact of fruitfulness as we should.

Jesus did all the work for our salvation, and is still working interceding on our behalf. We are not a fourth, fifth or tenth part of the trinity. We as servants not stars, called to be ambassadors of Christ, unto reconciliation and restoration. As we plant and water only God gives the increase! Our Holy Father calls us to come and receive, to take His yoke upon us and learn of Him. As we learn to walk with Him, we are to walk more like Him in grace and truth.

We submit to God to resist the devil, not fight the devil. It is God who works in us to will and to do of HIS good pleasure. We operate most successfully against the enemy only under God’s power and authority. He gives grace to the humble, because submission to Him is required in the work. We learn to wait on the Lord, endure hardness as a good soldier, equipped and armored for spiritual warfare with God’s spiritual suit. We stand in faith and follow in obedience to God who by Holy Spirit affects the outcome. If God be for us, who can be against us.

But church, we have to agree with God first for the evidence of one faith, one Lord and one baptism to be seen as a light in this dark world. Having all things on one accord, as the body of believers fitly joined together in Christ Jesus, we, US will be a powerful influence for Christ’s sake in the world.

Judgment will begin at the house of faith. God will deal with the world and will do the separating when He comes. We who make up the church need to judge ourselves to see whose side we are on and so that we will not be judged as part of the problem hindering the body of Christ from being seen as God intended.

  15. Thank you John Cooper for all you’ve given to the church and our kids. It would be really helpful if you would name the influencers, leaders and worship leaders you’re talking about, so that we are educated about their error. If we do t see an article or headline, we don’t know.
    Bless you

  16. I think one of the reason(s) that some prominent people have left the faith is they never had a real life changing encounter with Jesus. I had one 40 years ago and it has kept me going all this time. I had times trouble and unbelief but, when I really wanted to quit Jesus said to me ” deny your experience that day you met me and I will not be your friend any more.” I couldn’t do that because it was real.

  17. This is the first time I have had the chance to sit down and actually read through what he said. I agree with John that it is insane to place the weight of Biblical accuracy upon the shoulders of those who are sometimes so new to the gospel themselves.

I am so glad to be a part of a church that constantly points back to the gospel as our guide for almost everything. Scripture is used in reasoning, not the lead pastors thoughts on something.

  18. It’s not a new thing ya know… It was happening before John was exiled to Patmos and he wrote, in his first letter in the second chapter, about not loving the world, about those who want to be replacements for the Savior and said that those same people had been among them but had gone out from them and this was to reveal that they never really had been with them.

That’s what I see in all of this; people who may have been raised in the church or came around because it seemed good at the time, and jumped through all the traditional hoops but never had an honest (eternal) conversion… (They were never truly born of the Spirit).

Even they believed they did and that they were “born-again” because they said the “right words” and did the “right things”.

But the words of Scripture are very clear and not to be taken lightly…
“(((Believe in your heart)))… and confess with your mouth”.

Don’t confuse (accepting a premise) with “Believing in your heart”.

We are not told to consider the idea of the Gospel to be worthy of following or to follow the path that your friend or family member has taken.

We are told that the Holy Spirit has come into the world to convince us about the Father, convict us of sin and convey the Gospel of grace; cutting us right down to dividing our soul from our spirit.

If that hasn’t happened… sorry, you’re not born-again… you can’t know the Father and Jesus Christ whom He has sent… You do not have eternal life in you. You may like all the group stuff and feeling like you are right because you are hanging out with a body of people who seem good… and participating like kids at a sports event competing against another school…

But the true, born of the Spirit Disciple of Christ will have a convincing revelation of God’s reality, a deep recognition of guilt, the need of that forgiveness given through the cross of Christ and then knowing they are truly forgiven of actual sin.

It’s easy to join the club and wear the T-shirt but Jesus said,
    1. lay down your life,
    2. pick up your cross
    3. follow me

There’s your first three commandments; have you started?
